More than 60% of sophomores in the Science, Technology and Society program of College Park Scholars have secured summer work related to their majors. These opportunities include an REU at University of Texas-El Paso in applied intelligent systems, in which Alexa Stott will work with undergraduates from across the country. As a computer science and psychology double major, this interdisciplinary opportunity is an excellent fit for her interests. Ruth Ludlum, a psychology major, will be a research assistant at the Developmental Social Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory, under the supervision of Dr. Elizabeth Redcay. By designing pilot studies for neuroimaging, Ruth is furthering her interests in autism-related research.
Other sophomores are working with the Human-powered Hovercraft Project - Team Gamera, and the departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering (FireTEC), Astronomy, and Computer Science, and the Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE). In the private sector, sophomores have secured a co-op at L-3 Communications in Salt Lake City, and internships at Amazon in Seattle, Lockheed Martin, Siemens, Booz Allen Hamilton, XiGo Nanotools, Fru-Con Construction, ATK Space Systems, Flexel Inc., Energy Solutions in Columbia, Jacobs Technology in Aberdeen, Telcordia Technologies, and Qiagen. In the public sector, students will be interning at NASA, the FDA, NIST, the Department of Homeland Security, NIH, Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, NAVSEA in Carderock, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
The Science, Technology and Society program of College Park Scholars awards credit to students who revise their resumes, interview potential employers at the campus jobfairs, and participate in University Career Center and Engineering Co-op and Career Center workshops. Freshmen are coached to prepare an elevator speech and in Colloquium they hear returning sophomores and juniors deliver presentations about their summer internships. These activities yield results, as students think big and prepare themselves to seek competitive work opportunities.
