Dr. David Tomblin, Director


David has been the director of the College Park Scholars Science, Technology and Society Program and the STS University Certificate Program since 2013. David Tomblin has a PhD in Science and Technology Studies from Virginia Tech, where he studied the role of ecological restoration in the political revitalization of the White Mountain Apache Tribe. Currently his research focuses on creating novel forms of citizen engagement with emerging science and technologies. He also is the research coordinator for the Expert and Citizen Assessment of Science and Technology network with whom he has done projects creating and evaluating participatory technology assessments for NASA, Department of Energy, the Danish Board of Technology, the Kettering Foundation, and NOAA. David teaches courses on science and technology studies, history of science, environmental history, democratization of S&T, governance of emerging technologies, and socio-technical systems and disasters.

Mr. Matt Aruch, Assistant Director


Matthew Aruch has developed a robotics based service-learning program in collaboration with Prince George’s County Public Schools and is responsible for developing and teaching several practicum courses including a study abroad course exploring the relationship between technology and society in Ecuador. Matthew is a doctoral student in international education policy at the University of Maryland . A career educator, Matthew has been fortunate enough to study, travel, live, and work in many countries including the United States, Costa Rica, Honduras, Indonesia and Ecuador.  Matthew’s interests include science education, the role of technology in education and development, sustainability science, and education for sustainable development as well as improving the teaching, learning and overall educational experience for educators and students wherever he might be living or working.  Matthew has degrees from Mary Washington College (B.S. Biology ’03 & M.S. Education ’04) and the Harvard Graduate School of Education (Ed M. International Education Policy ’11).


Dr. Thomas Zeller, Professor of History


Thomas Zeller’s work is mostly concerned with the intersections of the history of technology and environmental history. In particular, he has written on the history of roads and landscapes in the United States and Germany during the 20th century. His monograph, Driving Germany: The Landscape of the Autobahn, 1930-1970 was published in 2007; it is a revised english translation of the book Straße, Bahn, Panorama. Verkehrswege und Landschaftsveränderung in Deutschland 1930 bis 1990. His current research includes a comparative study of 20th century parkways in the United States and Germany; this project is entitled Consuming Landscapes and has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress.

Since the fall of 2002, he has been working at the University of Maryland, where he is based in the Department of History and holds a joint appointment with theA. James Clark School of Engineering. Besides teaching in the Department of History, he offers classes in the College Park Scholars Program in Science, Technology, and Society. After a one-year position as a research fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington, D.C., during the academic year 2002/2003, he was a Visiting Research Fellow at the GHI from 2003 to 2006.


Dr. Nicole Mogul, Assistant Director


Nicole Mogul has been teaching in the College Park Scholars Program since 2013; she also teaches Engineering Ethics for the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) on campus. Before coming to College Park, she was teaching graduate students in Science and Technology Studies (STS) at Virginia Tech. Her research interests include public engagement with science and technology, sustainable cities, community radio, and universal design. She studied biology as an undergraduate at Colby College and holds doctorate in science and technology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
